  • Cards that could have been better......

When we think of hockey cards that are fantastic, we think of the 1955 Jacques Plante parkie rookie. The action photo of Plante is fantastic. We think of the 51 parkie winning goal card, and so many more. However, there are cards that leave us scratching our heads (or other parts of our body), when we think of the photo or design they used. I'll start us off with this one................ In my view the worst Gretzky card ever made. Click image for larger version

One of my favorite players of all time, never really like the MacInnis rookie. Always found this card kinda hard to find back in the day. Here's a nice O/C version.

Looks like the Gump is making a call at a close play at home plate.

One of several mis-matched heads and bodies from 68-69 OPC. This is probably the worst - and creepiest.

1980-81 Topps...possibly the worst hockey card idea ever?

In the 90s, when I was a teenager, I pulled this Patrick Roy insert card from a pack:

That is a strange looking card. Never saw that one before.

That was to accentuate how big the goalie equipment was and that they actually took up the whole crease.

I think he's about to lift his glove hand, thinking the puck was in his trapper and he made a save.

Oh yeah, and then Detroit scored....

Do yourselves a favor and look up the 1994 be-a-player set. Among the highlights: Pavel Bure in a sauna wearing only a towel, Pat Verbeek feeding a pig, Alexei Yashin sitting at a piano, Joe Juneau playing drums, Joe Sakic eating pasta. There are too many gems in this set to mention.

The Be a Player Series is off the charts for unintentional comedy. Not sure what card manufacturers were thinking in the mid 90's.

The greatest goalie of all time's third year card features him looking like he's trying to suck a pickle thru a straw.

I have to say, I don't mind this card. It captures a pretty good moment in time, that being Roy in the backup goalie towel for a road game! This during the stretch of a few seasons where Roy played most of Montreal's home games, while Brian Hayward was the road warrior. They were a great tandem.

Just saw this one - ugliest vintage hockey card?

The photographer must not have liked Phil Watson

If so, the photographer would have been in good company.

Look up the final NHL standings in 1962 to understand why Phil looks this way. And 1961 was just God awful pathetic for the B's.

Phil: How did the photo come out?
Photographer: Oh, we’re going to use it on all your cards
                Phil: It’s that good?
                Photographer: Um...yeah
