  • If you had a $10,000 budget to buy 10 cards what would you buy?

There was a recent link posted on this forum about baseball cards as investments. If you wanted to create a portfolio of 10 hockey cards, with a $10,000 investment, what cards would you buy? I'm thinking in terms of what cards do you think would produce the highest return on investment, rather than what 10 cards do you think are the coolest. You can do 10 $1000 cards, 1 $9,000 card and 9 cards totaling $1,000, or anything in between.

I'm an all in kind of guy so I would probably wait to see how the rest of the year plays out and then buy the best Orr or Howe rc I could afford

      You don't say!

Well, I am more in this hobby for the 52' Parkhurst set. I would favor a #1 Maurice Richard in grade 8 for $9 000 if it ever comes down to that price and 9 other cards averaging $110 each.

You think that the second year Rocket Richard card in PSA 8 will produce the highest return on investment? Really?

  • #5
I would buy PSA 9s of every 1980s rookie card that I could get and then crack them out and resubmit for a shot at 10s.

        A 52 Richard PSA 8 is a beauty.

I basically did this with 5K and bought a PSA 6 Howe RC.

For pure investment return, I would pick up as many well centered Mario Lemieux rookies as 10K would buy. Probably 8 - 9 cards.
Put away for 5 years. Well centered 9's should be approaching 2K by then as the demographic for this card will be entering their prime
earning years and will return to collecting. This card is just undervalued in my opinion.

I actually did this in 2012 with a budget of $10,000.00 CDN when the CDN dollar was on par with the USD. I asked a collector friend of mine to put a selection of cards together for $10,000.00 CDN, this is what I bought (I would say I did quite well on these!):

              • 1954 Topps #8 Gordie Howe PSA 8
              • 1966 Topps USA Test #35 Bobby Orr PSA 6
              • 1978 O-Pee-Chee #115 Mike Bossy PSA 8 (Thrown in for free!)
              • 1979 O-Pee-Chee #18 Wayne Gretzky PSA 8
              • 1985 O-Pee-Chee #9 Mario Lemieux PSA 9
              • 1986 O-Pee-Chee #53 Patrick Roy PSA 9

Yup, very nice. Looks like you could sell the Orr Test for 10K now and you’d have gotten the rest for free!

Wow, nice choices. Congrats. Do you pick equities and other investments too?

You hit the mother lode, my friend! The Orr is fantastic and exactly the card I would want with a 10K budget.

jb217676, that's an impressive collection. Remarkable return too for a 6-year investment. I have a suspicion they're going to stay on the same track for the next 6 years too.
