  • Toronto Expo Question

This may seem like a silly question, but at the Toronto Expo, should a person expect that all prices will be in Canadian dollars?

I visited Toronto once many years ago, but not during the Expo. I went to any shops I could find and had the chance to meet a dealer I knew from buying online. Many of the people I met said that they would prefer US dollars. Obviously, the US dollar is worth more and they gave me prices that were fair for US currency. I just thought it was a little strange. I would think that since most people at the Expo will be from Canada, they would price everything in Canadian dollars, but I wondered if dealers ever ask for US dollars.

Also, if you are coming from outside Canada, what is the best way to convert your money without paying a large fee?

Yes. All prices are in CDN dollars 99% of the time. The best is to convert at your bank.

All prices are in CDN$, compare the exchange rates, most of the time it's cheaper to deal with a foreign exchange office than the bank.

Om my last visit to the Expo, a couple of years ago, I saw one US dealer demanding US Dollars (or equivalent). He had a sign that said all marked prices needed 25% added to them. IMO he was too lazy to change his prices for the show.

My limited exposure over two days indicated he was not very busy. Personally, I didn't even stop to look at what he had.

Yes foreign exchange office I would say. This does not mean the kiosk at the airport. Banks typically take 2.5% in my experience. You can usually get better at the exchange house. Not sure how funds are transferred?

I agree that the bank is the most expensive place to exchange money. If you are driving over, I hear the best rate is at the casino in Niagara Falls.
Prices are in C$ but most dealers will take US$ at the bank rate.

Are you coming to the show Earl?

I won't be at the May Expo, but I'm looking at the possibility of coming in November. I would be flying up to Toronto and staying for the weekend. I want to have enough money to make it worth the trip!

I know that at the last expo the booth for "Gerry's Sports Cards" had the prices listed on the cards in American funds - which I was quite surprised to see (being in Canada and all ...) this didn't come up until after I selected my purchases then the calculator came out to convert to Canadian funds ...

Very tacky! That's like the eBay ad that says Ken Dryden OPC rookie PSA 9, then you click on the auction and it's a PSA 9 OC!

When the US dollar is higher some dealers have all prices in US funds and please add 25% for Canadian funds.

Well hopefully we Canadians don't deal with these dealers so they do lousy at the show and don't come back. Your in Canada, take Canadian Bucks for your stickered items. Just re sticker your stuff if you have too IMO
If I am interested in something and see a sticker of $100 then all of a sudden the dealer Says it's $100 USD so you need to pay $125 Canadian, I don't care what they have I'll walk away.

+1 Dan. You've expressed my feelings and behavior exactly.

IMO this is nothing but greed.
