I remember having Johnny come up as an autograph guest at my old Civic Centre shows in Ottawa.

He told me it was his 75th birthday on show day but he would still come and fly home for his birthday party.

I picked Johnny up at the airport and dropped him off there at the end of the signing session and he had some great stories for me from his junior hockey and original six NHL days.

We had a big cake and candles for him and everyone in attendance sang happy birthday to him and he was really thrilled.

He was the best as he took the time to stop and chat or take photos with each guest.

It reminds me of the Jacques Plante RC.

Yes he was a star, a first ballot HOFer, an owner of many rings and great fame...but he was, more than anything, a gentlemen. I am grateful that he allowed so many of us to share a small part of his amazing story. Sharing his birthday cake with him on his 90th was a highlight of my life. Another generous Expo regular lost.
