  • Bobby Orr and stick tape

I have seen so many pictures of players from his era with tape all over their stick but I see he usually has no tape on his at all. Does anyone know why he played that way while everyone else was taping theirs or is there a benefit for him to not tape it at all. I have seen pics that have just one piece of tape on just one area and that's it. Never really noticed until recently.

I know he often played with just one strand on his blade and recently I heard an explanation--might have been while listening to Don Cherry's Grapevine show on the radio. Apparently he played with no tape on his blade as kid, but when he joined the Oshawa Generals he saw that all the other players had tape on their sticks and he assumed that it was a league rule that a player must have some tape on his stick blade. Too shy and quiet to ask for confirmation on this he just went ahead a put the minimum amount of tape on his blade--one strand.

BoysBlue, I'd heard the same story many years ago.
